    John Steinbeck. The Grapes of Wrath. New York: The Viking Press, [1939]. First edition. Octavo. 619 pages. Publisher's light brown cloth with reddish brown wraparound line drawing, titles in reddish brown on spine; top edge stained dark yellow; pictorial endpapers; in the original dust jacket with $2.75 price and First Edition intact on front flap. Spine toned; light rubbing to binding. Endpapers with offsetting and browning; mild scuffing to top edge of text block. Jacket spine panel browned; jacket worn with several tears, including a closed tear of near five inches across the front panel (tape on verso), and creases; tape repairs to verso; some toning and offsetting to jacket flaps. Good. The Frank J. Hogan copy, with his bookplate on the verso of the front free endpaper.

    Frank J. Hogan (1877-1944) was a prominent lawyer and book collector. As an attorney, he had several notable clients, including Warren G. Harding, Edward L. Doheny (Hogan defended him in the "Teapot Dome" scandal), and Andrew Mellon. Hogan also served as president of the American Bar Association. In 1938, Hogan made a radio address, denouncing anti-semitism and race prejudice. At the time of his death, his book collection was reputed to be one of the most valuable in private hands.
