First edition, first issue with "and only moved because the heavy hands were pendula" on page nine, bullet between 8's on page 88, printed by J. J. Little and Ives Company. Octavo (7.375 x 4.75 inches; 186 x 127 mm.). [1]-186, [6, blank] pages. Original light brown publisher's cloth; front board and spine stamped in black and orange; all edges trimmed; in the original illustrated dust jacket, printed in black. Spine ends gently pushed; slight brown spotting just visible along front joint. Edges of text block slightly toned with a couple very faint scuff marks. Two smudges of thumbsoiling, one at page 122, fainter one at bottom of page 123. Dust jacket toned at spine panel and edges, less so at verso; one three-quarter inches chip at upper rear flap fold; slight wear to edges and folds; flaps clipped. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Housed in a custom blue-gray leather-covered clamshell, spine lettered in gilt with two raised figures resembling cover illustration on front panel.
