    Description

Inscribed by John Steinbeck to Noted Collector Barbara McLain

John Steinbeck. In Dubious Battle. New York: Covici-Friede, [1936].

First trade edition. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "for Barbara McLain / John Steinbeck." Octavo. 349, [3, blank] pages.

Publisher's yellow cloth, covers and spine ruled in red, spine lettered in black, original dust jacket. Jacket spine very slightly darkened, some rubbed creases to joints, some wear (including a few short tears) to edges, several tape repairs to verso. Some rubbing, soiling to cloth, later owner's small address label on front pastedown. Still, a near fine copy which shows well.

Barbara McLain was a well-known twentieth-century literature collector, who focused on Christopher Morley, Ernest Hemingway, and Steinbeck. The papers relating to her collection are housed in the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin.
