    Description

Wonderful Presentation Copy, Inscribed by Steinbeck to his Close Friend, Actor Burgess Meredith

John Steinbeck and Edward F. Ricketts. Sea of Cortez. A Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research. With a Scientific Appendix Comprising Materials for a Source Book on the Marine Animals of the Panamic Faunal Province. New York: The Viking Press, 1941. First edition, presentation copy. Inscribed on the title-page: "For Burgess Meredith one/of/God's noblest vertebrates/John Steinbeck." Then, near the bottom of the same page, Steinbeck additionally inscribed his familiar "catbird" doodle and beneath it inscribed: "(In hoc duck vincet)/with this duck conquer."Additionally, this copy has a clipped signature by Meredith tipped-in, and a small signed black and white photograph of Meredith (ca. 1950) laid in. Octavo. [ii]-x, 1-598 pages. With forty plates inserted between pages 278 and 279, some in color. Green cloth, stamped in silver on front cover and spine, dust jacket, top edge stained orange. Jacket spine very slightly browned, some minor wear and a few short tears to jacket edges, front hinge professionally repaired, gutter facing title page overopened (probably done when Steinbeck made his charming inscriptions). Overall, a near fine copy, inscribed to a close friend (actor Burgess Meredith portrayed Lenny in the first filmed version of Of Mice and Men, and Meredith was a witness for a contract between Steinbeck and 20th Century Fox for the film rights for The Moon Is Down.) Sea of Cortez is a collaboration between Steinbeck and his close friend, Ed Ricketts, and is a record of their visit to the Gulf of California on the Western Flyer, a seventy-six-foot purse seiner, to collect marine invertebrates in March - April 1940. This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
