John Dos Passos. 1919. New York: [1932]. First edition, inscribed. [with:] Sheet Signed by Dos Passos. [1932].

    More Information:

John Dos Passos. 1919. New York: Harcourt, Brace, [1932]. First edition, inscribed by Dos Passos. In dust jacket. With a sheet signed by Dos Passos. Inscribed by Dos Passos on the front free endpaper: "Sincerely yours/John Dos Passos/December 1932". Octavo. 473 pages. Publisher's full orange cloth, front board and spine stamped in silver, dust jacket. Jacket spine sunned, jacket chipped and worn, with some toning and thumbsoiling, cloth spine a bit soiled, some rubbing to binding. Bookplate. Very good. [Together With:] A sheet of stationary from Dos Passos' friend, poet and historian Stewart Mitchell. On this sheet near the bottom, Dos Passos has signed: "John Dos Passos/Sept 14-32/Gloucester, Mass." Around this, Mitchell has written a letter to his friend, Davis Lawler James, Jr. (whose bookplate is on the book), explaining that here is the book that he asked Dos Passos to sign (it took longer than anticipated because Dos Passos left for Mexico before the book was published, and Mitchell had to wait for Dos Passos to return). He also had Dos Passos sign this sheet (blank at the time) and Mitchell wrote his friend a letter around it. Stewart Mitchell was a friend of Dos Passos who was one of the eight Harvard Poets whose work, along with Dos Passos, appeared in anthology form in 1917. From the collection of Donald Kaufmann.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
