James Joyce. Ulysses. Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1922. First edition, limited to 1,000 copies, of which this is number 877, one of the 750 copies printed on handmade paper in its distinctive blue wrappers. Printed for Sylvia Beach by Maurice Darantiere at Dijon, France. Quarto (9.5 x 7.5 inches; 241 x 191 mm). [1-2], 3-732 pages (pages 377-380 and 381-384 are uncut). The book, with blue wrappers, is bound into contemporary half-linen boards with designed onion paper covers. Publisher's prospectus, advertising the novel's publication "in the Autumn of 1921," with a tipped-in reproduction of the 1918 photograph of Joyce by C. Ruff, affixed to front endpaper with tape. Newspapers clipping of photograph of Dublin is glued to front pastedown. Binding is in good condition with front inner joint showing the beginnings of slight separation. Internally book is very good to near fine.

February 2, 1922, Joyce's birthday, was the intended date of publication of Ulysses, but only two copies were printed that day, both from the 750 copies printed on handmade paper. Following later in February the remainder of the 750 copies were printed before copies 1-250 were printed, thus although the 750-print run is numerically higher, it actually preceded the others in production.

A remarkable copy of the first edition of Joyce's masterpiece.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
