    Description

James Joyce. Ulysses. London: The Egoist Press, 1922. First English edition, printed in France; limited to 2000 copies, of which this is number 1116. Quarto (9 x 7 inches; 228 x 177 mm.). [4, blank], [7], [1, blank], 732, [1], [3, blank] pages. Publisher's perfect binding in the original oversized wrappers, printed in blue and folded over the preliminary and terminal blank leaves; page edges untrimmed. Joints worn, front joint splitting for about two and one-half inches from the bottom edge; routine edgewear; backstrip faintly dulled; wrappers lightly soiled; lower corner of the front wrapper very slightly bent. Bookseller notations in pencil on the recto of the second blank; intermittent light marginal soiling; margins very faintly tanned; colophon leaf creased at the upper corner. All in all, an about near fine copy of a fragile book, attractively preserved. Publisher's errata, four unbound leaves, laid in; margins lightly soiled, minor edgewear. Printed by John Rodker in Paris; from the same plates as the first edition, making this technically an early printing of the first edition and not a new edition. Purportedly, 500 copies were seized and destroyed by U. S. customs, though copies numbered in the suggested range have since surface, casting doubt of the veracity of the claim. Slocum & Cahoon A18; Connolly 42.
