First Edition of James Michener's First Book Signed by Him and with His Personal Ink Stamp

James A. Michener. Tales of the South Pacific. New York: Macmillan, 1947. First edition, first printing, of the author's first book. Signed by Michener in green ink on the half title (probably a later signature). Michener's personal ink stamp (in red ink) is to the right of his signature. Octavo. [viii], 326, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's full brown cloth, spine lettered in blue, price-clipped presumed second printing dust jacket. Jacket spine a bit sunned, jacket rubbed and a bit toned, cloth spine dull, binding rubbed and a bit soiled, endleaves foxed, text toned, especially at margins. Bookplate. Jacket is a bit shorter than the book. Still, a good copy, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948, and the basis of the famous stage musical, South Pacific. From a private collection in North Carolina.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
