Jack Kerouac. On the Road. New York: The Viking Press, 1957. Second printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Mimi / from / Jack Kerouac." Octavo (8 x 5.25 inches; 203 x 133 mm.). Publisher's black cloth, front board and spine lettered in white; top edge stained red; in original dust jacket. Cloth spine with mild wear and soiling; boards with some rubbing and light soiling; mild offsetting to endleaves. Binding slightly skewed. Top edge of text block somewhat dampstained. Jacket spine crown with a tape repair to verso and some color correction; jacket spine a bit sunned; some light rubbing and edgewear to jacket; rear jacket panel a bit wrinkled and thumbsoiled; price-clipped. Very good. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.

According to provenance articulated in a bookseller's catalog description, this copy came from the family of Lucien Carr, specifically from the library of Francesca Carr, the wife of Lucien Carr; Mimi was apparently Francesca's mother. Carr was a central figure in the birth of the Beat Movement and, along with Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, instrumental in establishing the genre.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
