    H. G. Wells. The New Machiavelli. New York: 1910. First edition, with a lengthy inscription by Wells.

    More Information:

    H. G. Wells. The New Machiavelli. New York: Duffield, 1910. First edition, first printing, inscribed by Wells on the front free endpaper: "The following quotations are omitted from the first American Edition of 'The New Machiavelli', through an oversight in proof reading / H. G. Wells / March 3, 1911//A closer Examination...shows that/Abraham was a Normalist under a new/name./G. H. Lewes Hist. Philos.//It suffices for our immediate purpose that/tender minded & tough minded people.../do both exist./William James Pragmatium." The first American issue that omits the above quotes. Twelvemo. 490 pages. Publisher's full red cloth, front board and spine lettered in gilt. Spine a bit sunned, minor rubbing to binding, small numerical sticker on front pastedown. Fine.

Despite his fame, Wells had difficulty getting the current work published in Britain. This edition by Duffield precedes the 1911 London printing. The volume is autobiographical in that it is derived from Wells's then-recent affair with Amber Reeves. It strikes at the very heart of the Victorian code of morality and even satirizes some of Wells's prior friends.
