    H. G. Wells. Love and Mr. Lewisham. London and New York: Harper & Brothers, 1900. First edition. Signed by Wells on the title-page. With an original photograph of Wells signing this book at the 1937 Boston Book Fair, which appeared in a 1937 issue of the Boston Herald.

    Octavo. [viii], 323, [1, colophon], [4, ads] pages. Publisher's full red cloth, front cover ruled in white, front cover and spine lettered in gilt. Some rubbing and minor soiling to binding, hinges cracked, Still, good. [With:] An original photograph of H. G. Wells signing this book for the chairman of the Boston Book Fair on behalf of an "attractive student" (as per the typed and penciled blurb on the verso of the photo. Approximately 6 x 5.5 inches. With a vertical crease near the left margin, and with part of the Boston Herald inkstamp on the verso. Also laid-in is the printed photo excised from the article which ran in the Boston Herald. With the bookplate of legendary book collector and patron the arts, John Quinn (bookplate designed by Jack Butler Yeats). Now housed in cloth chemise and quarter red morocco slipcase.

    One of Wells' first forays outside of science fiction, and one of the rarest in first edition (reputedly much of the first edition was destroyed in a warehouse fire).
