Signed by Welty on the front free endpaper. Octavo. [xx], 285, [1, blank] page. With inserted half-title and title-page. Publisher's full terra-cotta cloth, front cover and spine stamped in green and white, dust jacket. Jacket spine quite sunned, headcap chipped, some wear to jacket extremities, tears along joints near spine, jacket toned, some rubbing to binding. Composer David Diamond's copy, with his embossed stamp on the title-page and pencil notes on the front free endpaper (beneath Welty's signature), and throughout the introduction. Overall, a very good copy.

    More Information:

    David Diamond (1915-2005) was a classical composer best remembered for is Rounds for string orchestra, composed in 1941. Katherine Anne Porter was a very close friend of his, and he even dedicated his first symphony to her, so this is copy has an excellent association. Porter's introduction to this book was not only important to Welty's career, but she sponsored Welty's first visit to the artists' community at Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, New York.
