Hemingway's Film Set Copy with Handwritten Annotations by Him

Ernest Hemingway. The Old Man and the Sea. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, [1952].

Later edition. With handwritten annotations by Hemingway on several pages. Octavo. 140 pages.

Publisher's blue cloth with silver spine titles and Hemingway's blind-stamped signature to front board. Housed in a custom leather pictorial clamshell case designed to mimic the dust jacket of the book. Spine darkened. Moderate wear to boards. Very good.

This copy of Hemingway's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was Hemingway's "set copy" used during the filming of the Warner Brothers film. It was kept on a clipboard on the set along with a copy of the working script for the film. The book was used by Hemingway on the set to consult and suggest changes to the script.

The book is annotated in part by Hemingway, with his specific suggestions present on pages 32, 33, 73, and 110. Additional annotations and deletions in both ink and pencil can be seen, some most likely by Hemingway and some of which are definitely in another hand.

The book comes down through Ted Littleton, who worked for Warner Brothers during the filming of The Old Man and the Sea. He remembers the book being kept on a clipboard, along with a copy of the film script (a clipboard scar can be seen on the top part of the upper cover, where someone has drawn a rectangle in ink). Mr. Littleton received the book from one of the production staff shortly after filming was completed, and some years later, he gifted it to a friend who was interested in Hemingway. A unique item for the serious Hemingway collector.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
