Description

Limited Edition in the Rare Glassine Wrapper

Ernest Hemingway. God Rest You Merry Gentlemen. New York: House of Books, Ltd., 1933.

First edition, number 296 of 300 limited edition copies. Small octavo.

Publisher's original red cloth with gilt spine titles and black titles on the front board. In the original, and surprisingly well-preserved, glassine wrapper. Fine condition.

When this story appeared again in late 1933 in the short story collection Winner Take Nothing, in the line following the boy's guilty admission of his lusty thoughts, Doctor Wilcox's reply was edited to read "Oh go and ---." Here, the original version, the good doctor's response is printed "Oh, go and jack-off." Because the small limited edition was purchased by only a few collectors interested in Hemingway's work, the questionable language slipped by the critics.

This is a most satisfied customer's testimonial of a true gentleman in today's era. It is rare that one encounters through the course of life a person which one has read in childhood' s classics or seen in movies of old.
