    Description

Ernest Hemingway. For Whom the Bell Tolls. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1940. First edition, first issue; presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Ben and Maura / with much affection / and memories of / the good chasse / Ernest Hemingway." Presumably, Hemingway is referencing hunting by using chasse, the French word for "hunt." Octavo (8.25 x 5.5 inches; 209 x 140 mm.). [x], 471, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's light brown buckram, front board with facsimile of Hemingway's signature stamped in black, spine stamped in red and black. Publisher's dust jacket. Cloth spine toned and rubbed, with some loss of stamping; minor rubbing and soiling to binding; some offsetting and foxing to endleaves, light toning to text. Dust jacket restored; spine panel a bit sunned; light rubbing, scuffing; two creased tears repaired. A very good copy in a restored jacket that presents nicely. Housed in later cloth clamshell case. Hanneman 18A. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
