    More Information:

Ellen Glasgow. The Descendant. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1897. First edition of her first book. Inscribed by Glasgow on the front free endpaper and the title-page: "Ellen Glasgow's cordial/acknowledgements to/Mr. Duffield Osborne./November Tenth, 1897/(over)/[title-page:]I want [?] no name upon my Page,/This motto ["A Novel" printed on the page] and instead:/'This book owes much to her who wrote/but more to him who read!". Octavo. 276, [6, ads] pages. Publisher's full brown cloth, front board and spine decoratively stamped in green and lettered in gilt. Spine toned (green is very faint), some rubbing and edgewear to spine, gutter facing title-page is overopened (possibly from when Glasgow inscribed). Skewed. Very good, with an excellent inscription to a fellow author. From the collection of Donald Kaufmann.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
