    Description

Four First Editions Signed by Dawn Powell

Dawn Powell. Four Signed First Editions, including: A Time to be Born. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1942. First edition (Scribner's "A" on the copyright page). Inscribed "To Mother / with love / Dawn" on the front free endpaper. Interestingly, Powell's mother passed away when Powell was seven years old, so this inscription is either to a different mother figure or a nostalgic nod to a long-lost parent. [and:] The Locusts Have No King. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1948. First edition (Scribner's "A" on the copyright page). Signed "love / Dawn" on the front free endpaper. [and:] Sunday Monday and Always. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1952. First edition. Signed "- Love / Dawn / Publication June 24" on the front free endpaper. [and:] The Wicked Pavilion. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1954. First edition. Signed "love / Dawn" on the front free endpaper. All volumes are octavo, bound in the publisher's cloth, and in the original pictorial dust jackets. Moderate edge wear to the boards and jackets. Some chipping to the jackets. Spine of Locusts sunned. Jacket of The Wicked Pavilion price-clipped. All volumes in very good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
