    More Information:

The inscription reads: "For Jonathan Reynolds- With the gratitude of an old man to a young man who has liked his book. What would happen if today you were old and white and rich - and I were young and black and poor? I don't know. Because if youth is the best condition, everyone should be young. And if white is the best condition, everyone should be white. And if rich is the best con-dition, everyone should be rich. But we are almost never what we had wished our-selves to be - neither you, nor I - and we shall never be. We are what we are - and what we are is not too damned bad. And also what we are kills no one anywhere in the whole world, which is more than I can say for certain American presidents I have known. - And so - Your Older Friend, Dalton Trumbo. Los Angeles May 21, 1965."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
