    D. H. Lawrence. The Lost Girl. London: Martin Secker, [1920]. First edition, first state, with the leaves containing pages 255-256 and 267-268 integral, leaving the objectionable text on intact; signed by the author on the front free endpaper. Octavo (7.5 x 4.875 inches; 190 x 125 mm.). 371, [1] pages. Publisher's smooth brown cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, boards double-ruled in blind; top and fore edges trimmed, bottom edge untrimmed; in original dust jacket. Spine just barely askew; spine ends softly pushed and very lightly worn; boards gently bowed and very faintly soiled with an occasional tiny blemish or splash. Text block very slightly sagging; free endpapers faintly discolored; two small partial stickers to front pastedown. Dust jacket spine panel faintly dulled; edges worn with chips to fold edges; crown chipped with some paper lost, large (width of spine panel to just below the rule beneath "Lawrence") paper fragment detached and held in place with tape on the verso, short closed tear extending into the rear panel; lengthy closed tear from the bottom edge of the rear panel, about an inch from the rear spine fold, curved around to the rear flap fold about just above the eleventh line of text from the bottom, repaired with tape on the verso; folds creased. A near fine copy in a good dust jacket. According to a note written by the publisher in a copy held at the University of Texas, "only about 90 or so [copies]" were issued with the unedited text. Roberts & Poplawski A16.
