Charles Jackson. The Sunnier Side. New York: [1950]. First edition, association copy, inscribed to Jean Stafford.

    More Information:

Charles Jackson. The Sunnier Side. Twelve Arcadian Tales. New York: Farrar, Straus, and Company, [1950]. First edition. With a lengthy, warm inscription to author Jean Stafford on the front free-endpaper and the front pastedown: "March 1st '50/Dear Jean/I send my/admiration and love/as always, and four/or five tales herein that/may be worth your while./Affectionately/Charlie Jackson/Oxford NH". Then, continuing on the opposite front pastedown: "And[crossed out]/And I'm/delighted to/hear the/new news/about you-/the good, the/happy news./C J". It is possible that Jackson is referring to the 1950 marriage of Stafford to Oliver Jensen. Stafford's ownership inkstamp is on the front free endpaper. Octavo. 311 pages. Publisher's full blue cloth, front board and spine stamped in gilt, dust jacket. Jacket spine sunned, some tears, chipping, thumbsoiling and edgewear to jacket, some toning to cloth spine, some mild rubbing to binding, some toning to endleaves. A very good copy with an excellent literary association. From the collection of Donald Kaufmann.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
