Carson McCullers' Original Typed Outline for Her First Novel, The Mute, Later Renamed The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, with an Inscription by Her on the First Leaf

Carson McCullers. Inscribed Typed Outline for "The Mute". [N.p., n.d., ca. 1930's]. Thirty-seven quarto hand-typed pages (rectos only) on plain paper. Inscribed by McCullers on the first leaf in black ink: "Outline for/Heart is a Lonely Hunter/1940/Carson McCullers". Approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. leaves are age-toned as well as a bit creased, there are some rust-marks from paperclips on the first and last pages, there are some stains to the first and last leaves (final leaf quite heavily stained). Contemporary pencil inscription of a possible previous owner on the first leaf. A unique and fascinating item, the earliest known version of McCullers' best-selling and critically acclaimed first novel (both the Modern Library and Time Magazine named it one of the 100 best English-language novels of the twentieth century). With a three-page auction list from 1947 naming this item (sold in the same lot as a copy of the book) from the Literature Division of P. C. A. auctions in New York. As far as can be determined, it has been nearly seventy years since this important item was offered for sale at auction. Now housed in a custom gilt-stamped full green morocco clamshell case.

    More Information:

"This the [sic] is theme of man's revolt against his own inner isolation and his urge to express himself as fully as possible. Surrounding this general idea there are several counter themes and some of these may be stated briefly as follows: (1) There is a deep need in man to express himself by creating some unifying principle or God. A personal God created by a man is a reflection of himself and in substance this God is most often inferior to his creator. (2) In a disorganized society these individual Gods or principles are likely to be chimerical and fantastic. (3) Each man must express himself in his own way--- but this is often denied to him by a wasteful, short-sighted society. (4) Human beings are innately cooperative but an unnatural social tradition makes them behave in ways that are not in accord with their deepest nature. (5) Some men are heroes by nature in that they will give all that is in them without regard to the efoort [sic] or to the personal rewards. Of course these themes are never stated nakedly in the book." (From the first leaf of this outline).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
