    Description

    One of Six Copies

Carl Sandburg. Soo Line Sonata. [Los Angeles]: [Ward Ritchie, Printed at Frank Wiggins Trade School], 1929. First edition, one of six copies. Octavo. 16 pages, only ten printed and hand-numbered, others inside conjugate leaves glued shut at corners. Loose sheets. Light toning, edgewear, and dust soiling. Numbers marking each page number on upper corners. Small oxidation imprint in shape of paper clip on p. [1] and p. [10]. Pencil marks on line 14 of p. [6] and line 13 of p. [7]. Thumbprint on p. [7]. Lacking colophon. Very good. From the collection of California bibliophile Melba Berry Bennett.

Bookseller Jake Zeitlin presented Sandburg's Poem "Soo Line Sonata" to Ward Ritchie, then a Frank Wiggins Trade School student, and asked him if he would print it. ("The Many Faces of Jake Zeitlin") Sandburg contacted Zeitlin to tell him that he did not want the poem in print, thus only six copies of Soo Line Sonata exist.

    More Information:

Melba Berry Bennett was a descendant of Irish-Welsh-English pioneers and a second-generation Californian, Born in 1901 in Los Angeles. A scholar, poet, writer and bibliophile, Melba Bennett was an avid reader of poetry, and was drawn to the works of Robinson Jeffers in the 1930s.
