Bram Stoker. The Mystery of the Sea. New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1902. First American edition. Inscribed and signed by the author in the year of publication, "My dear Elizabeth Marbury / with love & greeting / Bram Stoker / 22.3.02" on the front free endpaper. Octavo. 498 pages. Publisher's green cloth decoratively stamped in dark green, with gilt titles. Minor edge wear. Moderate dust-soiling to the boards. Spine a bit faded. Light cracking to hinges. Overall, a very nice copy in very good condition. Elizabeth Marbury was a pioneering theatrical agent and manager, who worked with the likes of Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Henry Irving and Bram Stoker. In his Personal Reminiscences of Henry
Irving, Volume I, Stoker writes: "In May 1896, whilst in New York, Irving
and I went to see Miss Elizabeth Marbury, the agent for America of the French Dramatic Authors' Society." Also, Marbury was instrumental in creating the Broadway tradition of the "Book Musical" which is still in place today.
