First Edition of B. Traven's Masterwork

    B. Traven. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1935.

First American edition. Octavo. 366 pages.

Publisher's black cloth over boards with gilt titles on spine. Blind-stamped front cover titles. In the rare publisher's pictorial dust jacket. Rubbing at corners with very minor board exposure. Spine has slight fraying to tail and a small tear to the head. Top edge stain. Dust jacket edges and folds with expert restoration. Light rubbing to front and rear panels. Original price of $2.50 on front flap. Nameplate card neatly mounted on front pastedown. Signed by the F. Scott Fitzgerald scholar "Arthur Mizener September 1936" on front free endpaper. A beautiful copy of the reclusive author's most important work. Near fine.

At the time this edition appeared, Traven's work was little known in Britain and America, although he was already a widely popular writer in Germany and throughout Europe. It was only with the success of the John Huston film version of this novel, starring Humphrey Bogart, that Traven attained the status in the English-speaking world that he enjoys to this day.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
