Description

Anthony Burgess. The Worm and the Ring. London: [1961]. First edition of an uncommon book, suppressed for legal reasons.

    More Information:

Anthony Burgess. The Worm and the Ring. London: William Heinemann Ltd., [1961]. First edition of this uncommon book (most of the print run was pulped due to legal action). Octavo. 273 pages. Publisher's full burgundy cloth, spine lettered in gilt, price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket spine a bit toned, some rubbing and light edgewear (a few short tears) to jacket, cloth spine a bit dull, some light rubbing to binding, text slightly toned. Slightly skewed. Still, a near fine copy. From the collection of Donald Kaufmann.

This book is based on the author's experiences as a teacher at Banbury Grammar School in Oxfordshire in the 1950's. When the book was published, the school instituted legal action, as some of the characters were recognizable as people from the school. Although the publisher agreed to "amend all unsold copies of the book," they instead pulped the remaining unsold copies. It is unknown how many copies survived.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
