Alexandre Dumas. The Count of Monte-Cristo. London: Chapman and Hall, 1846. First complete English-language edition in book form. Two volumes; octavo (8.25 x 5.25 inches; 211 x 134 mm.). [ii, title-leaf], 464; [iii]-iv (contents), 464 pages; frontispiece in the first volume and nineteen additional illustrated plates after M. Valentin inserted throughout the text (note: twenty plates are present, but due to the apparent lack of a title-leaf in the second volume, it is assumed that the second volume frontispiece is in the text). Contemporary furbished half-calf over marbled paper-covered boards; spines lettered, ruled and tooled in gilt; boards triple-ruled in blind; page edges sprinkled red over a chain-design pattern left blank; recent endpapers with older binder's blanks. Corners and spine ends refreshed, joints possibly touched up as well; possibly an ex-library copy with evidence of circular spine label in the upper compartment of the first volume; backstrips somewhat soiled with a small scuff to Volume II; boards rubbed; board edges worn with some paper loss. Each volume in want of a preliminary leaf; upper-gutter margin of frontispiece renewed with paper repair; upper corner of plate opposite page 331 in Volume II torn with some paper loss; occasional spotting and marginal soiling. Very good; an attractive sophisticated set; housed in a custom clamshell case. From the Collection of Daniel J. King.
