Alex Haley. Typed Letter Signed ("Alex"). Norris, Tennessee, August 21, 1991. Haley warmly corresponds with an associate.

    More Information:

One quarto page on one quarto leaf of personal stationery. Approximately 10.5 x 7.25 inches. With horizontal creases, minor wear to upper edge. Excerpts from letter: "I have thought how nice it would be if you could do something with me, but alas, I have no such opening at all. It goes without saying that I wish you every luck in getting accepted in this year's law school class. To tell you the truth, I think if I had to make the choice, I would probably prefer to be a lawyer than an editor."     The recipient of the letter is George Spencer, editor of Tennessee Illustrated, a monthly magazine similar to Texas Monthly, which was published by Time, Inc. Mr. Spencer, as editor, sought out the finest writers born in Tennessee. Mr. Spencer describes his relationship with Alex Haley in this way: "Alex Haley, who was born in west Tennessee, owned a place in Knoxville where my company, a Time subsidiary, was based. He also had an estate north of town. He invited me to his homes. We dined together. He was a most gracious gentleman. And a great storyteller. He had a wonderfully positive impact on race relations in America. Our country could use a man like him today."  Mr. Spencer describes Alex Haley's motto: "'Find the good and praise it.' Advice well worth taking".

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
