[Virginia Woolf]. Cross-Stitched Tapestry Handbag. [London (?): circa 1910s]. Fully embroidered in cross stitch in blue, purple, pink and green on a pale blue background with an abstracted tulip vase design with purple drawstrings. Bag measures about 9 inches-square, housed in a shadowbox frame of approximately 15.5 x 15.75 x 2.5 inches. Accompanied by a Descriptive Invoice from Sotheby's-Parke Bernet establishing the provenance. According to the invoice and the Sotheby's catalog listing, the bag was embroidered by Woolf and given by her to Janet Case, Woolf's classical Greek tutor from 1902 to around 1907. Case became a close friend and an influence in her work as well as her personal life, maintaining a relationship with Virginia, and her husband Leonard, for the next three decades. Woolf published a remembrance of Case in the London Times following her death, after which she wrote of Case in her diary, "And how I loved her, at Hyde Park Gate... and how great a visionary part she has played in my life, till the visionary became a part of the fictitious, not of the real life." A remarkable artifact, wonderfully preserved. (Henry M. Alley, A Rediscovered Eulogy: Virginia Woolf's "Miss Janet Case: Classical Scholar and Teacher.")
