A Remarkable Collection of Over One Thousand Pocket Books,
Encompassing the Imprint's First Twenty-One Years

[Pocket Books]. A Very Large Group of Pocket Books, Including a Complete Run of the First 1,257 Titles. New York: Pocket Books, in association with Simon and Schuster, [1939-1960]. Mixed printings throughout (title #1, Lost Horizon, is a fourth printing). All mass market paperbacks. Numbers 1-1257 are all present; this collection also with numbers 1258-1278 (missing six numbers). 1,272 total books in this lot, all in very good or better condition.

Pocket Books was the brainchild of Robert Fair de Graff whose dream was to offer "the widest variety of books at the lowest price to the greatest number of people." Pocket Books, the first mass-market "pocket-sized" paperbacks issued in America, revolutionized the publishing industry with its low-priced editions of popular fiction, mysteries, and non-fiction titles. Not only was Pocket Books known for its affordable editions of classics and recent bestsellers, it was also a godsend for artists who were commissioned to do the eye-catching original cover art for the imprint's incredibly diverse selection of titles. The books were immensely popular -- at the end of the first year, 1.5 million books had been sold. A collection this complete is almost unheard of, and the remarkable condition of these books is truly astounding. A wonderful opportunity to acquire an instant collection of one of the most important achievements in twentieth-century publishing history.

    From the Pocket Books website:

"In the late 1930s, Simon & Schuster planned to create the first U.S. mass-market publisher, utilizing modern production techniques and distributing the resulting inexpensive paperback books through magazine distributors and outlets. It was the firm's intention, as Robert Fair de Graff said, to provide "the widest variety of books at the lowest price to the greatest number of people." The result was Pocket Books, a series of pocket-sized paperback reprints of classics and recent bestsellers.

"Pocket Books initially test-marketed the idea in New York City with ten titles. Artists were commissioned to design new cover art for the paperbacks, and the partners set a 25-cent cover price to further attract customers. At the same time, Frank J. Lieberman created the bespectacled kangaroo named Gertrude that would become Pocket's logo."
