Early Illustrated Work on Traveling and Hunting in Tibet

Lieutenant-Colonel T. E. Gordon. The Roof of the World, Being the Narrative of a Journey Over the High Plateau of Tibet to the Russian Frontier and the Oxus Sources on Pamir. Edinburgh: Edmonston and Douglas, 1876. First edition. Octavo. xiv, 172 pages. With twenty-four tinted lithograph plates (including frontispiece), forty-two other tinted illustrations in text, and a folding map. Bound in half leather over marbled boards. Titles stamped in gilt on a green morocco spine label. Minimal shelf wear to binding. The contents generally sound with some foxing and light dampstains to the plates, a small closed tear on the folding map, and an unobtrusive former owner's blind stamp on a couple of the preliminary pages. Very good condition.

Gordon broke new ground through the Tian Shan and Pamir highlands as he was one of the first Europeans to explore and hunt sheep in the area. He preceded other hunters like Demidoff and Littledale, Swayne, and others by several decades.

    Cordier 2820. Neat G35. Royal Geographical Society Catalogue, p. 188. Yakushi, G88.
