Lewis Carroll. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. London: MacMillian and Co., 1866. First published (but second overall) edition with inverted 's' to Contents page, p. 30 correctly numbered. Octavo. [12], 192 pages. With 42 illustrations by John Tenniel. Publisher's original red cloth, gilt pictorial boards, spine lettered and stamped in gilt; spine panel rebacked with original spine laid down, scratches or repaired tears to original spine, one large vertical tear affecting gilt stamped title (approximately 3 inches; 74 mm), corners bumped and a bit rubbed, minor scratches, a few minor stains. Original pale blue endpapers, all edges gilt; minor chips, a few spots, binder's ticket to rear pastedown, front and back hinges reinforced. Internally generally clean; some spotting, thumb soiling, and foxing scattered throughout. Housed in a red crushed full morocco pull-off case and chemise, spine stamped and decorated in gilt; minor toning, staining, with a few scratches. Very good copy of the first published edition of Alice in Wonderland with professional restorations.

2,000 copies were printed of the first edition, first issue of Alice in Wonderland in 1865. Dodgson recalled these copies because illustrator John Tenniel was "dissatisfied with the printing of the pictures." Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch note, "Tenniel must have been hypersensitive about his drawings: the only fault in the British Museum copy appears to be that some... are more lightly printed than the rest."

Williams, Madan, Green, and Crutch 46.
