This major treatise of demonology knew only two editions in Latin and a translation in French. This second edition printed in 1589 is considered to be the best, as it came out of the most famous press of the sixteenth century, that of the Aldes in Venice (Aldine). The original was published in 1583 in Paris.

"The work of Leonardus Vairus on witchcraft or diabolical magic appears to have been composed in Latin and was published in French translation at Paris in 1583. The earliest Latin edition I have seen was that of Venice, 1589. Vairus became bishop of Pozzuoli from 1587 until his death in 1603. The Latin title of Vairus's work, De fascino, denotes witchcraft rather than fascination. He defines fascinum as 'a pernivious quality induced by art of demons because of tacit or express pact of men with the same demons.' He denies fascination by power of imagination, by strength of morbidity of vision, by touch and contact, or by words, characters and observation of the stars. Nor are there any born fascinators. In his last chapter Vairus treats of safeguards and amulets against the impostures and illusions of demons, a topic to be developed more fully in the work of Codronchi in the next decade, which much resembles the treatise of Vairus in other respects." - Thorndike.
