    Description

Renaissance-era Europe's Introduction to Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci. Traitté de la Peinture de Leonardo de Vinci Donné au Public et Traduit D'Italien en Francois par R[oland] F[rear] S[ier] D[e] C[hambray]. Paris: Jacques Langlois, 1651.

First edition in French. Folio. [20], 128 pages. Added engraved title page, title page vignette, two head-pieces, and 56 in-text copper engravings drawn by Charles Errard after Nicolas Poussin and engraved by René Lochon.

Contemporary full vellum with gilt titles and decoration on backstrip. Vellum has drawn, causing significant bowing to boards. Page 9 with a cleanly repaired tear to bottom edge. Worming at lower corner of pages 15-28 (causing some abrasions) and along bottom edge of pages 109-120. Internally clean. A near fine copy.

Excerpts from Leonardo's Treatise had already appeared in Lomazzo's Trattato dell' Arte de la Pittura of 1584 but this was the first and finest complete published edition. Compiled from da Vinci's manuscripts after his death by his pupil Francesco Melzi, this text served as Renaissance-era Europe's primary introduction to da Vinci's artistic theories and principles.

Steinitz. Leonardo da Vinci's Trattato della pittura (Treatise on painting), p. 22.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
