Leo Tolstoy. Anna Karenina. Moscow: T. Ris, 1878. Presumed second edition, collected works issue, of which this is parts nine through eleven; presentation copy, inscribed by the author for his wife's uncle on the front wrapper of the first volume: "To my dear old friend Vladimir Aleksandrovich Islavin, from the author." Three volumes, octavo (7.5 x 5.25 inches; 191 x 133 mm.). 370; 493, [3, blank]; 413, [1, blank] pages. Twentieth century brown quarter-morocco over marbled paper-covered boards; spines lettered in gilt and ruled in black with four raised bands tooled in gilt; all edges trimmed; marbled endpapers; binder's blanks; original wrappers bound in, lacking the front wrapper of the third volume; ribbon markers. Boards very gently bowed; trace, minimal wear to the leather; corners softly bumped and lightly worn; ribbon markers frayed, lacking at the ends. Text silked throughout, on occasion quite extensively (including the entirety of one leaf, the first of the second gathering), front wrapper silked along the fore-edge, partially affecting the inscription; some inner margins restored; light soiling to wrappers. Still, an attractive, very good set. From the Marilyn R. Duff Collection.
