Description

Laws Passed by the Ninth Congress of the Republic of Texas. Washington: Miller & Cushney, 1845. First edition. 8vo. 134 pp. plus Index. Contemporary brown buckram binding; leather spine label with gilt lettering. Light to moderate age toning throughout. Title page is moderately foxed and bears a few blue and brown ink spots. Boards and spine are in nice condition. Generally fine.

One of the rarer reports from the Republic's Congress, this issue includes the first printing of the act creating Baylor University. Also includes an Address to the People of Texas with regard to annexation. Of special note is the first printing of the famous treaty between the Republic of Texas and the Texas Comanche which was signed October, 1845 and ratified in December. It established a line of trading houses which would later serve as the demarcation line between Texas and Comancheria, but this deliberately vague definition would be the source of future troubles as the frontier between Anglo and Comanche land expanded westward.
