An Early French Edition of De La Vega's Excellent History of Florida

l'Inca Garcillasso de la Vega. Histoire de la Conquete de la Floride: ou Relation de ce qui s'est passé dans le Découverte de ce Païs par Ferdinand de Soto... Leyden: Chez Pierre Vander Aa, 1731. Nouvelle Edition. Two small octavo volumes. [xxvi], 290; [ii], 293-582 (with the usual pages mis-numbered, as per Sabin) pages. With engraved fold-out map and nine engraved fold-out plates inserted. Engraved title-pages printed in black and red. Bound in contemporary full brown mottled calf, spines tooled in gilt in compartments, brown gilt morocco lettering labels, five raised bands, gilt board edges. Some soiling and wear to bindings (soiling is mainly on spines), some dampstaining and foxing in text, each volume with a plate that partially extends from the fore-edge (those edges are a bit worn), in volume II, page 481/482 had the bottom margin torn out (with no loss of text), each volume with a defaced bookplate on the front pastedown. A good set. This is an early French translation of La Florida del Ynca, originally published in Spain in 1723. Sabin 98748.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
