Kay Cleaver Strahan. Footprints. Published for The Crime Club, Inc., Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1929. First edition, stated. Octavo. 316 pp. Publisher's black cloth, lettered in red on the front board and spine with The Crime Club logo stamped in red on the front board; original illustrated dust jacket printed on orange paper and original bellyband printed in black on green paper announcing the title as the winner of the Scotland Yard Prize. Internally clean; pages unevenly toned, minor edgewear. Dust jacket unclipped (price $2.00); minor wear to head and foot of spine and corners, bellyband with minor soiling and partially sunned. Near fine book with near fine dust jacket.

Winner of the Scotland Yard Prize for Best Detective Story of the Year ($2500, 1929), selected by booksellers affiliated with The Crime Club: Will Cuppy, William Rose Benét, and Grant Overton. The advance sale on the title was so large that it was sent to press for a second edition of 10,000 copies, a month before publication of the first. Several of the plot devices developed by Strahan in this book would go on to influence well-known detective fiction for the next several decades including Q. Patrick, who used a series of letters to relate the mystery in S.S. Murder (1933), and Agatha Christie and Ellery Queen who went on to use the "dying message" as one of their trademarks. Kay Cleaver Strahan's previous book, Desert Moon Mystery, was the first ever title published by The Crime Club (Doubleday, Doran & Co, Inc., 1928). Publisher's Weekly, Volume 115, Issue 3, p. 103.
