Kaladlit Okallurtualliait ["Legends of Green-land"]. Fourth volume. Noungme [Godthaab]: Inspectorate Press of Lars Møller, 1863. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by printer Lars Møller. Octavo. [vi], 123 pages. With twelve woodcuts, including three full-page, by native artists, including Aron of Kangeq; title vignette by Rasmus Berthelsen. Original printed yellow boards; worn and rubbed, corners bumped, spine chipped and a bit sunned, some scattered soiling. Pages untrimmed; a few with minor chips and tears to edges. Internally clean and bright; every so slightly toned, very occasional minor spotting. Signed and inscribed on the title page by the printer, 7 x 9 mm portion excised affecting inscription. Very good.

First edition of "Gronlandske Folke-Sagn" (volume IV), with Greenlandic text printed opposite a Danish translation. This four-volume series is "probably the first text printed by Native American people preserving their own cultural heritage. It represents the earliest [printed] expression of the Esquimo soul... handed down through generations of oral tradition" (Oldendow, Printing in Greenland, page 24). It was created on a printing press that Hinrich Rink brought from Denmark in 1857. Each volume was separately issued over several years, and complete sets are very rare; the fourth volume is unknown to Sabin who records volumes I-III (1859-1861).

Lauridsen, Bibliographia Groenlandica page 210; Miles & Reese, America Pictured 32; Oldendow Printing in Greenland, pages 24-27; Sabin 36978 (but volumes I-III only).

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
