Jules Verne. Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Seas. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1873. First U. S. edition. Octavo (7.875 x 5.375 inches; 200 x 136 mm.). viii, 303, [1, blank] pages; frontispiece and 109 illustrated plates inserted throughout. Publisher's cloth, brown variant, first state with central jellyfish vignette in gilt on the front board and lacking the final "S" in "Seas" on the spine; spine and front board lettered and ruled in black and stamped in gilt; rear board ruled in blind; brown coated endpapers; flyleaves. Expert restoration the spine ends with possibly renewed head- and tailbands. Spine very gently leaning; boards just barely bowed; spine ends worn and laid down to prevent further damage; front joint lightly worn with a short closed tear beginning at the upper edge; boards edges with a few touches of wear; corners tapped; rear board with some minimal rubbing. Bookplate causing some discoloration to the pastedown, contemporary gift inscription and later ownership signature. Very good. An excellent example; housed in a custom clamshell case. One of the more difficult to find English-language Verne editions, with most copies lost when a warehouse went ablaze in the Great Boston Fire of 1872. The speculated number of surviving copies varies but is usually under 100.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
