The First British Edition of a Verne Rarity, The Clipper of the Clouds

Jules Verne. The Clipper of the Clouds. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1887. First British edition (as well as first hardcover edition and first illustrated edition). Octavo. [viii], 234 pages. With frontispiece and forty-one plates inserted throughout, as well as publisher's thirty-two page catalog and a one-page list of Verne's Works inserted at rear. Publisher's decorated full blue cloth with gilt titles. All edges gilt. Spine a bit dull, binding somewhat worn and thumbsoiled, hinges starting, a few gutters overopened, a few plates re-inserted, evidence of bookplate removal from front free endpaper (though endpaper is undamaged). Still, a good copy of this story of the adventures of the mysterious Robur and his flying ship, the Albatross. Verne wrote this book about a heavier-than-air flying vehicle more than sixteen years before Orville and Wilbur Wright's historic first flight. Myers 12.
