    Description

Joseph G. McCoy. Historic Sketches of the Cattle Trade of the West and the Southwest. Kansas City, Mo.: Ramsey, Millett & Hudson, 1874. First edition. 8vo. 427 pp. Illustrated with many black and white engravings. Twenty-four pages of advertisements. Early rebinding in black cloth over boards; the original cloth covers with the blind-stamped longhorn design (front and back) are attached. Gilt lettering to spine. Some insect damage to front board. A few pages have some stray penciled scribbles. Light foxing. Bookplate to front pastedown. Very good.

McCoy was the chief architect of the 19th century cattle drives out of Texas to markets north via the Chisholm and associated trails. Ramon Adams calls this book "one of the 'big four' cattle books, written by a man who opened the market for Texas cattle. This is one of the first and most important books on the cattle trade." The book includes a wealth of information and insight into all levels of the cattle industry. McCoy "gives biographical sketches of early ranchmen, cowboys, drovers, traders, financiers of the trade, and the personnel of the stock yards. He described the cowboy dances, wintering the herds, branding, and all other features of the industry" (Eberstadt).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
