    Joseph Conrad. The Rover. Garden City: Doubleday, Page, 1923. First edition, one of 377 signed copies (this is copy 24). This copy with an additional note by Conrad affixed to the front pastedown, and an autograph letter signed by his wife, dated twenty-four days before his death. Autograph note signed by Conrad, affixed to the front pastedown: "For Miss/Margaret M Herton/Joseph Conrad/1924". There is an additional (later?) portrait of Conrad affixed to the front free endpaper. On the verso of the front free endpaper is a contemporary photograph of his wife, Jessie Conrad. Facing that, affixed to the first blank, is a two-page autograph letter signed by Jessie Conrad (on one folded octavo leaf of stationery). "July 18, 1924/Dear Mrs. James,/I greatly regret the/delay in answering your/letter. As you will see by/the address I was not at/home when it arrived [the address is St. George's Nursing Home]./I am afraid there is very little hope of my/being home before the/end of the month./ It/would have given us/much pleasure to wel-/come you in Oswalds./Unfortunately Mr. Conrad/is only now recovering/from a prolonged ill/ness and his doctor/has ordered change of/air and scene./With Kindest regards and/Sincere regrets./Believe Me/Very sincerely Yours/Jessie Conrad." Octavo. [viii], 1-[372], [4, blank] pages. With signed limitation sheet and original frontispiece portrait inserted at front. Bound in later twentieth-century full black levant morocco, front board and spine stamped in gilt, with original pictorial gilt-stamped vessel from front board of original binding and gilt-stamped spine title also from original binding, affixed to front board and spine, respectively, later endleaves. Spine a bit sunned, binding rubbed with some loss of color, original gilt portions of binding toned with some wear, some sunning to endleaves. Still, a good copy with excellent additions.
