Jorge Luis Borges. Poemas. [1922-1943]. Buenos Aires: Editorial Losada, [1943]. First edition, a significant association copy, inscribed by the author for Estela Canto on the half-title page: "A la hermosa Estela Canto, con toda mi amistad ... Jorge Luis Borges, Agosto 1944," with a fair copy manuscript of the poem "Un patio," published on page twenty-four of the text. Octavo (8.125 x 6.875 inches; 205 x 148 mm.). 181, [1, printer's note], [2, blank] pages; title-page in red and black. Publisher's perfect binding with plain wrappers; in original illustrated, oversized dust jacket, affixed to spine and folded over the wrappers (as issued). Spine just barely askew; backstrip very faintly dulled; spine ends lightly worn and corners; very light marginal soiling with a couple tiny bruises to the front panel; trace foxing; edges just a shade discolored. Text block very faintly browned; only occasional very light foxing; previous owner signature on the title-page, dated 1949. Near fine. Estela Canto was the object of Borges's affection for many years. She was a journalist and writer; she typed Borges's manuscript for El Aleph. In her biography of the author, Borges a contraluz, she recalls meeting the author at the home of Adolfo Bioy Casares and Silvina Ocampo in August, 1944 (p. 19), surely making this presentation among the earliest sentiments exchanged by the author to one of his most notable companions. From the Marilyn R. Duff Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
