First edition, association copy, inscribed by the author to Francisco Romero, a Spanish-born Latin American philosopher, who served as the editor of philosophical publications at Losada, which published several of Borges's works: "Para Francisco Romero, con afecto / Jorge Luis Borges." Octavo (8.125 x 5.5 inches; 205 x 140 mm.). 201 [202, blank], 203 (contents), [1, blank] pages (note: pages 1 and 2 are blank); frontispiece portrait. Publisher's perfect binding with plain wrappers; in original oversized dust jacket, affixed to spine and folded over the wrappers (as issued). Spine gently leaning with a couple very minor creases; spine ends softly pushed; edges very lightly worn; some minimal soiling. Text block toned with some foxing to the bottom edge; small scribble (signature?) on the preliminary blank. Near fine. One of Borges's most popular collections. William J. Kilgore.
