Midpoint is warmly inscribed by Updike to Pulitzer-Prize winning poet William Meredith ("a real poet from a pretend poet"), Hugging the Shore and The Afterlife are warmly inscribed by Pulitzer-prize winning poet Karl Shapiro ("Grow old with me; the best is yet to come"), and Brazil is warmly inscribed to the widow of his publisher, Helen Knopf ("I believe you were married in Brazil, so don't mind the factual details").
