An Original Typescript, Signed by John Updike

John Updike. Cohn's Doom. NY: NYer [New Yorker Magazine], 11/8/82. Original Typescript of Updike's book review of Bernard Malamud's God's Grace (Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 1982). Signed by Updike on the first leaf. Seven quarto leaves, rectos only. Approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. On plain white paper. First leaf and sixth leaf with some soiling, a few editorial marks (unclear if done by Updike or an editor at the New Yorker). Still, fine. This review originally appeared in New Yorker magazine, issue 58, November 8, 1982, on pages 167-170. It was reprinted in a collection of Updike's essays, Odd Jobs (Knopf, 1991). [Together With]: Lovell Thompson 1902-1986. Beverly Farms, MA: [n.d., ca. 1986]. Two photocopies of the original typescript, one copy signed by Updike, with a brief note by him ("Herewith - as per conversation with Austen Gines [?]./J.U."). Each copy four quarto leaves, rectos only. Approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. Both copies staple-bound in upper left corner. Signed copy a bit browned, with two horizontal creases. Still, very good. A copy of the draft of Updike's memorial read by him at Thompson's funeral (the two were good friends). From the collection of Alexander J. Jemal, Jr.
