Description

John Steinbeck Signed & Numbered First Edition: Saint Katy the Virgin (New York: Covici-Friede, 1936), first edition, #103 of 199 copies signed and numbered by Steinbeck, 25 pages, orange and gilt decorative boards, 16mo (4.75" x 6.75"), protective tri-fold cover and slipcase, includes the rarely-present publisher's Christmas card announcing the upcoming publication of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men the following February. This is one of Steinbeck's most peculiar stories, a farcical history of the religious conversion and eventual canonization of a fourteenth-century French pig. He had a strong personal attraction to the story and, after years of trying to get it published, he arranged with Covici-Friede to issue it as this gift book. Fine condition, original owner's bookplate present on inside front cover. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
