First Edition, First Issue of Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize-Winning Novel

John Steinbeck. Of Mice and Men. New York: Covici Friede Publishers, [1937].

First edition, first issue, with bullet between the eights on page 88 and with "and only moved because the heavy hands were pendula" on page 9, lines 20-21. Octavo. 186 pages.

Original beige cloth with the front cover and spine stamped in terracotta and black. Top edge stained blue. Original pictorial dust jacket with the $2.00 price. Very minor rubbing to the binding. Pencil notations on the front free endpaper. Dust jacket shows some rubbing, fading to the spine and corners, a few small losses to the spine, and a few tiny closed tears. A very good copy.

Due to the seemingly offensive language, profanity, and the perceived stances on business and euthanasia, the novel was subject to much censorship and was subsequently placed on the American Library Association's list of Most Challenged Books of the 21st Century. Steinbeck's emotionally stirring novel, for which he gained both a Pulitzer Prize and much controversy, continues today as an enduring fixture among the American classics.
