Description

First Edition, First Issue in Dust Jacket of Steinbeck's Rare First Book

John Steinbeck. Cup of Gold. New York: Robert M. McBride, 1929.

First edition, first issue with the McBride title page (second issue copies have the Covici-Friede title pages bound from the same sheets). One of 2,476 copies printed, of which 939 were unbound and eventually went to Covici-Friede. This is an apparent variant copy with the top-edge stained blue, and with the last final blank present. Octavo. [vi], 269, [3, blank] pages.

Publisher's full yellow cloth, front cover and spine lettered in black. In the original pictorial dust jacket illustrated by Mahlon Blaine. Jacket spine sunned (as is usual with this title) and chipped at edges (some loss of text), some wear to edges, some scuffs to panels, and a dampstain to the fore-edge of the rear panel, cloth is mildly rubbed. Several pages unopened. Overall, near fine copy of this rare book (so rare that Steinbeck himself did not own a copy). Housed in quarter morocco clamshell case.

    Goldstone & Payne A1.
