    Description

    First Editions of Paradise Regain'd
    and
    Samson Agonistes

John Milton. Paradise Regain'd. A Poem in IV Books. To which is added Samson Agonistes. London: Printed by J. M. for John Starkey, 1671. Two volumes bound in one. First editions of both works, first issue of Paradise Regain'd (with "loth" incorrectly printed as "loah" on page 67). Small octavo. [iv], 111, [1, blank], 101, [1, Omissa], [1, Errata], [1, blank]. License leaf is present before general title. Bound in nineteenth-century full tan calf, boards triple-ruled in gilt, spine ruled and elaborately tooled in gilt in compartments, two brown gilt morocco lettering labels, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves, all edges gilt. Front board nearly detached, some additional wear to binding. Text slightly toned, some occasional soiling in text, margins trimmed a bit close (we can find only one example of minor loss to a marginal number). Bookplate of Mary Bryant Sprague. Still, a good copy.
